Throughout each stage is number of checkpoints if play gets hit by obstacles too many times, they have to restart from checkpoint. In some stages, Pepsiman head becomes stuck steel drum, controls, skateboard. Play does this by using 4 different moves run, dash, jump, and super jump. Play aims to dodge obstacles, such as cars, construction cranes, and people, as well as Pepsi branded obstacles, including Pepsi truck. Game is play from 3 person perspective, with Pepsiman automatically running forwards through stage, sometimes run through people living rooms. Stages are all based on real locations, such as San Francisco and New York City. Pepsiman is action game that consists of 4 stages, each divided into smaller segments, and each involving superhero Pepsiman saving person who is in need of drink, such as military man in middle of desert, by giving them can of Pepsi. According to Uchikoshi, game did sell well. Writer for Complex included it on list on list of company branded games that did suck, commenting that it is not bad game as long as play can tolerate large advertisement in it. Reviewers frequently compared game to other games, including Crash Bandicoot, and commented on it simplicity and price, which was thought to be low. Northwood replaced live action segments with 3D CGI cutscenes, as studio had a higher budget, and they promo game in sweepstakes for Pepsi products. Game was originally going to be Japan exclusive until Northwood Interactive pick up right to publish game worldwide. Game also features 3D, for which future visual novel writer Kotaro Uchikoshi create 3D models. Game was made in low budget, prompting decision to make videos in between stages that show man drink Pepsi, as they were cheap to produce. It was released in Japan in 1999, and month later in North America and Europe, and is based on American carbonated soft drink Pepsi superhero mascot with same name, and focuses play avoid obstacles by run, dash and jump, while Pepsiman automatically runs forward through each of game stages.
